In 2004-2005 with the support of Gorta, Salome Ojiambo completed a certificate in sustainable agriculture and rural development at Baraka Agricultural College in western Kenya. Since completing her course, Salome, a married mother of five, has become recognised in her area for her work. She has become more involved in her community and is now a provider of quality cassava stock and training on best practise for growing cassava to local farmers. Read more »

Before I left Ireland, climate change was an important issue. I knew that it was important – but it was remote and of seemingly little impact. However, like a good citizen I turned off the lights and turned off the tap when washing my teeth as advised by the TV campaign. When I arrived to Kenya, I learned one of the most important lessons of my life. Climate change is real and it's worse than I thought. Yes, it is caused by humans. Gorta has been a major partner of Baraka Agricultural College from the late 1970s to date. This partnership has been effective in establishing one of the finest and most appropriate education and training centres in Africa. Over the years Gorta has supported the improvement of college infrastructure and also financed personnel. In recent years the Gorta Scholarship Scheme has been a very effective and innovative way of empowering rural communities of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Read more »
