Helpful Fundraising Tips

Many hands make light work:remember that working with friends can be a lot easier than working alone.

Check your dates: there may be a danger of all your hard work going to waste if you find out at the last minute that there is another event on the same day.  Be sure to check this out in advance.

Check your timing: make sure also that your hard work is not undone because you have underestimated how much time everything will take.  Be sure to build in some extra time or contingency in your plans to allow for any mishap to be taken care of.

Check your costs: Be aware of what your event is going to cost and don’t be shy to approach local businesses or your employer for support either financial or in kind. Again leave room for manoeuvre in case the unexpected happens.

Communicate, communicate, communicate: Tell everyone you know, and everyone they know about your event - use email, the web, word of mouth, work colleagues, local papers, local radio, parish news, posters and schools to get the message out.

On the Day: be sure you know the order in which events are running, who is responsible for the various tasks and make sure that everyone involved knows what is going on! Put together a fact sheet and list of contact telephone numbers if necessary.

After the Event: remember to thank everyone involved and to follow up on their opinions of your event, so if you were inspired by this event you can go on to organise something even bigger and better next time.  Don’t forget to send on the money and any pictures you have to us so we can thank you for all your hard work: simply send on a cheque made payable to Gorta, 12 Herbert Street, Dublin 2 or lodge it into our bank account, details of which are available by contact us at tel 01 661 5522.

SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY: at all times be aware of safety! When collecting money be sure to store it securely at all times, do not carry it around by yourself, counting with another person is always a good idea.  Children under 14 are prohibited from collecting by law.  Children over 14 can do so but should be accompanied by an adult.  We do not encourage you to take part in high-risk activities on Gorta’s behalf.

OBEY THE LAW: Permits are required to collect money in a public place or if in a private place you need to get the proprietor’s permission. Please keep us informed of what you are doing and we will help you in any way we can.
