One of the smallest African countries, The Gambia stretches 320 kilometers along the Gambia River, one of the main waterways in the area and fully navigable. The climate is tropical, with rain forests along the riverbank and wooded savannah further inland.

The Gambia has no important mineral or other natural resources and has a limited agricultural base. The economy is based on peanut exports and tourism. Unemployment and underemployment rates are very high. Because firewood is used as a main energy source and to allow the production of crops for export, large areas of forest have been felled. Desertification is a problem and water-borne diseases are prevalent.
