Projects supported by gorta in India aim to assist the poorest of the poor in the rural areas. Over the last fifteen years, we have assisted SCAD - The Social Change and Development organisation, located at Cheranmahadeui, Tamil Nadu, to develop a variety of integrated rural development projects involving over 150 villages.
gorta has worked with SCAD on a number of projects including the establishment of a Vocational Training Centre, with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs. This project provided a range of rural skills technology with Government recognized qualification. As a follow on from this project, SCAD has also addressed the underdeveloped horticultural potential of the region as an alternative to traditional farming. In low rainfall areas, traditional cropping (rice and cereal production) is not successful but soil and climatic conditions are suitable for horticulture.
