Malawi
Though a relatively small country, Malawi’s climate is extremely varied. The most temperate region is to the south, which is also the highest, containing the majority of the population and economic activities, predominately farming. While the lowlands in the north receive heavy rainfall and are covered by grasslands and forests.
As an agricultural country, the Malawi's economy is based on food for export. It relies on crops grown by rural families who provide their own food and a little surplus to trade with. Soil degradation and deforestation are the main environmental problems in the country. As a solution to deforestation, gorta has implemented tree planting programmes with great success.
gorta currently supports a number of partners in the country which focus on water and sanitation issues. The projects funded by gorta all address a number of issues in an integrated approach, they also aim to establish food and water security as a platform on which to build further programmes.
