Uganda is a land locked country in East Africa on the shores of Lake Victoria. The land is made up of a number of plateaus rolling north-west towards the Nile. Nearly 18% of the country is taken up with rivers, lakes and swamps. The climate is tropical tempered by altitude. 6.2% of the land is covered by rainforest, so the cash crops are mainly timber plus tea, coffee, tobacco and cotton.

Uganda is ranked one of the 20 poorest countries in the world, with half of the population living below the poverty line and an average individual life expectancy of 44.5 years.
