Maureen's Nursery and Piggery Project, Kabale Municipality, Uganda

Challenge:

Small plots of land and poor soil quality in the Kabale Municipality of Uganda have lead to insufficient production of and access to food. These issues also have a knock on effects for education, with many households in the area not afford to send their children to school.

Action:

The main goal of the Maureen’s Nursery and Primary School in the Kabale district is to foster better lifestyles for its children. One of its initiatives currently being supported by gorta is the Nursery and Piggery Project. The group will construct suitable housing for, initially, four female pigs. They aim to rear 24 piglets within four months and sell them in the local markets.

Benefits:

The participants of the piggery project anticipate a number of benefits. The project will allow for the employment of nine parents or guardians to look after the pigs and work at the school. In turn, they will be able to afford school fees and food for their children. The income earned at the school can also go towards balanced meals for the children during the day. The waste from the piggery will be used to help in the development of the school gardens as well. Overall, the project should allow children to live healthier and to stay in school longer.
