Zambia
Zambia has a tropical climate , tempered by altitude. Mining is the country's main economic activity, due to the large copper deposits. Mining, however, has had harmful environmental effects. Soil erosion and loss of fertility are associated with the overuse of fertilisers.
Slums account for 45 per cent of the housing in the capital, Lusaka. Problems such as a lack of drinking water and inadequate health care are factors that contributed to the cholera epidemics of the early 1990s. Wildlife has also been threatened by poaching and there is a lack of resources to maintain wildlife reserves.
