Agriculture Recovery Programme – Stage 2; Rejunivation of agricultural Capacity, Chipata, Zambia
Challenge:
Various issues in Chipate area of Zambia contribute to low living standards. These low standards are visible in the agriculture, housing, sanitation, education and community facilities.
Action:
The Agriculture Recovery Programme Stage 2 follows the first part of a project which was initially funded by gorta in October 2006. Stage 2 of this project, run by CODEP, began in December of 2007. It targets 1,160 households from 21 various villages in the Chiefdoms of Chikuwe and Mishoro. Based on a farm inputs scheme, the project has made improvements to storage methods and facilities and provide marketing training. A building programme, another project aspect, will provide appropriate housing for the community’s most vulnerable people using a hydro-form block making technology.
The project will also include the establishment of early childhood development centres and a community social forestry programme. Contribution of supplies will also be made to the central health clinic in order to maintain previous efforts in HIV/AIDS issues. A specialist consultant will work in close cooperation with all local communities and authorities concerned. Exchanged visits and infield workshops is also be a part of this process.
Benefits:
Stage 2 of this project will improve the overall living standards of those living in the two identified Chiefdoms. The launching of childhood development centres will also have positive affects on the education of children. The establishment of the forestry programme will help generate income, as well as provide environmental sustainability. Enhancements in storage methods and facilities related to farming, with program provided training, will increase local farmers’ viability. A tradable surplus of crops will also be created.
