Food Production Gardens, Mufulira, Zambia
Challenge:
Murundu is a large rural village in Zambia. Within the village, live many local, vulnerable families that include the elderly, the sick, widows and orphans.
Action:
A feeding programme funded by gorta and initiated by the Murundu Development Centre will assist 140 vulnerable families and will be sourced from training plots. A school in Murundu of approximately 300 students, will train these students in metalwork, woodwork, agriculture and horticulture. Trained in sowing, cultivating and harvesting maize and vegetables, all students will be actively engaged in food production. The food harvested here, gets distributed amongst the 140 vulnerable, needy families, any extra produce will be sold to maintain running costs.
Benefit:
With this programme, a number of local families are provided with food they may not otherwise have. Thus, the programme contributes to the well-being and nutrition of the 140 families it supplies to. An added benefit is that the programme provides the students with sufficient skills to grow food for themselves and their families. It also aims to keep the school self-sustaining.
