Gorta – the Freedom from Hunger Council of Ireland will tomorrow ( Saturday, 10th September 2011) join the President of Ireland and patron of Gorta, Mary McAleese, Jimmy Deenihan T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Carál Ní Chuilín, MLA, Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure at the Northern Ireland Assembly, other dignitaries, community groups and local businesses in marking the National Famine Commemoration Day in Clones, Co Monaghan. The event reflects on An Gorta Mór (The Great Famine), from which Gorta derives its name as well as reflecting on the hunger that still exists in the world today. Read more »

Yes the crops are failing but hunger is not a failure of crops alone, it is a failure of governance, and we need to address that. There is a key role to play for government and non governmental agencies alike, including the private sector – there needs to be a more integrated response involving civil society along with the public and private sectors. Speaking from the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) meeting in Rome today, a senior representative of Gorta – The Freedom from Hunger Council of Ireland - Isabella Rae has called for “a grassroots change” in the way protracted crises – such as that in the Horn of Africa – are tackled.
