Tomorow's National Famine Commemoration in Ulster is a timely reminder of the crisis in East Africa
Gorta – the Freedom from Hunger Council of Ireland will tomorrow ( Saturday, 10th September 2011) join the President of Ireland and patron of Gorta, Mary McAleese, Jimmy Deenihan T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Carál Ní Chuilín, MLA, Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure at the Northern Ireland Assembly, other dignitaries, community groups and local businesses in marking the National Famine Commemoration Day in Clones, Co Monaghan. The event reflects on An Gorta Mór (The Great Famine), from which Gorta derives its name as well as reflecting on the hunger that still exists in the world today. Read more »

Statement to the Emergency in the Horn of Africa, International Meeting, 18 August 2011
Yes the crops are failing but hunger is not a failure of crops alone, it is a failure of governance, and we need to address that. There is a key role to play for government and non governmental agencies alike, including the private sector – there needs to be a more integrated response involving civil society along with the public and private sectors. Gorta endorses UN FAO call for greater investment in preventative measures to avoid famine
The international community rallied today to the aid of drought- and famine-affected populations in the Horn of Africa with an immediate, twin-track programme designed to avert an imminent humanitarian catastrophe and build long-term food security in the region. Read more »
