Ireland’s overseas aid agencies today welcomed the statement by Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin, who addressed the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee on the issues of last week’s UN Summit meeting. In his statement, the Minister indicated that the highlight of the Summit was the international high-level meeting on global hunger, which was co-hosted by the US and Irish Government. He also praised the “strong representation at the Summit” by Irish NGOs, working together under the Dóchas umbrella. Read more »

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin, T.D., hosted a gathering in New York of leading figures from the political, corporate and civil society sectors to announce details of a commitment to address the immediate need to ensure children all over the world receive adequate nutrition in the first 1000 days, from conception to the age of two. The 'Change a Life, Change the Future' strategy is a collaboration harnessing the efforts of different countries in the area of childhood nutrition. Read more »

An event in New York City yesterday was titled 1,000 Days: Change a Life, Change the Future, and it stressed nutrition from conception through the first two years of a child’s life. Hillary Clinton praised the Irish “passion for fighting hunger”, saying that “the Irish know what hunger means from their history. They have become world leaders in the fight.” Read more »

Following the announcement by the UN in Rome today that the estimated number of people who suffer from chronic hunger in the world has declined this year to 925 million – a decrease of 98 million from the 2009 estimate of 1.02 billion, gorta CEO Brian Hanratty welcomed the reduction, but stressed that critical challenges remain if the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are to be achieved.
