News Release

CHARITY APPEAL: There’s a simple cure to Christmas Affluenza - present your unwanted gifts to Gorta!

If you have received any unwanted gifts this Christmas, why not recycle them in one of Gorta’s ten charity shops located nationwide.

“Imagine getting two copies of your favourite CD or DVD - or maybe you’ve gotten such a wonderful range of presents that your Spring Clean is starting early to make room for the new arrivals! Gorta shops welcome unwanted gifts as well as pre-owned items such as CDs, DVDs, books, clothes, jewellery, household goods and bric-a-brac – and all profits go to help Gorta’s work in Africa” commented Maggie Dwyer, Gorta’s Cork based Community Fundraising Manager, who added that Gorta is unable to accept toys or electrical goods.

“By giving your unwanted gifts to Gorta shops, the profits from the sale of these items will go directly to fund programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa where the need is greatest. Gorta supports agricultural activities including livestock rearing, irrigation schemes and other water-based projects. Gorta takes a holistic approach to the needs of some of the world’s poorest communities, and also co-ordinates educational, healthcare and income generating programmes, citing the old Chinese proverb that if you ‘give a person a fish, you feed them for a day; teach that person to fish, and you feed them for life,’” stated Brian Hanratty, Gorta’s CEO.

All Gorta shops will be open for business from 10am on Wednesday, 2nd January 2008. Gifts can be delivered to their charity shops located at Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Carlow, Portlaoise, Bandon, Macroom, Mallow and Skibbereen.
