Update on Progress in West Nile Region of Uganda
July 21st 2009
Gorta's support to the West Nile region of Uganda dates back over ten years. 1.9 million people in West Nile enjoy a standard of living only half the level of the national average. Because of this, the West Nile Development Initiative (WENDI) was formulated between Gorta and Ugandan partner organisation AFARD.
This development programme is focussed on improving:
- food and income security
- human development
- good governance
- and sustainability
In rural, marginalised communities, we target as many households in a village as possible. We look at their empowerment as an inclusive process of enabling them gain voice and choice to identify, prioritise, commit to and access critical resources for the well-being of their households and community. In all, Gorta supports 50 community based organisations in the region, through umbrella organisation AFARD.
Progress from Jan. - June 2009
Jonam Youth Development Initiative is one of the beneficiary organisations. Its core focus is on HIV&AIDS prevention and mitigation among the youths in Pakwach. At present, a a building is under construction which will house counselling rooms, a resource centre and offices. The wall works are now complete and roofing is underway.
Animal traction training in Anyegele is being conducted for all able-bodied members of the community-based organisations - women, men, elders and youth. The thirty-day training programmes are also on-going in the towns of Nebbi, Arua and Yumbe.
The first ever borehole since independence in Jupaliga East was completed and handed over to the community. A Community-based Finance system has been set up to cater for the operation and maintenance of the well, which will have enormous benefit for the community.
