Gorta World Food Day Conference to be broadcast online

October 13th

World Food Day 2009 On Friday October 16th, the global spotlight will be on the critical issue of accelerating levels of hunger and malnutrition. In Dublin, Gorta will gather a host of Irish and international speakers to consider the challenges and potential solutions to this, the number one risk to health worldwide.

And this year, for the first time, Gorta's World Food Day Conference will be accessible throughout Ireland - and beyond - via a webcast on www.gorta.org commencing at 9.15am on Friday next, live from the Gresham Hotel in Dublin.

“We have tens of thousands of donors scattered throughout Ireland who make our work possible, and we want to make this annual conference accessible to them, as well as the army of volunteers who help with a wide range of fundraising initiatives, including volunteering in our charity shops and helping with church gate collections", states Gorta CEO, Brian Hanratty.

The conference will commence with participation by the audience of over 150 representatives from the business, non-profit and public sector in a Pledge to Stand against Poverty – part of a global mobilisation of over one hundred million people.

In addition, the conference will also address the pressing challenge of climate change, a phenomenon created in the main by wealthy industrialised countries but which is threatening the world’s poorest, who are least well prepared to counter the adverse effects of drought, flooding and food shortages.

For those unable to attend the conference or watch the live webcast, Gorta will be micro-blogging from the event on Twitter and video highlights will be available on our Youtube channel.
