Excerpt:

In 2009, the number of people experiencing chronic or persistent hunger has reached its highest level in human history.

Today, almost one person in six does not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life, making hunger and malnutrition the number one risk to health worldwide - greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

The causes of hunger are many but can perhaps be summed up with one overarching reason: poverty. When people are poor, they do not have the training or resources - whether land, tools or money - necessary to grow or buy food on a consistent basis.
