More than 173 million people STAND UP against Poverty
October 21st
A Guinness World Record was shattered this weekend when 173,045,325 citizens gathered at over 3,000 events in more than 120 countries, demanding that their governments eradicate extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!, now in its fourth year, has been certified by Guinness World Records as the largest mobilization of human beings in recorded history, an increase of about 57 million people over last year.
All participants at Gorta's World Food Day Conference 2009, almost two hundred people, took part in the mobilization by reading aloud a pledge at the opening of the event.
The pledge was led by Rebecca Amukhoye, Gorta Country Representative for Uganda, Emily Banda, Project Director of Malawian partner organisation, PRDO and Karen Coleman, journalist and broadcaster. Students of two Dublin schools also attended the event to join in the pledge.
