Water & Sanitation

Working to achieve clean water and proper sanitation for some of the world’s poorest communities

Providing clean water for families throughout sub-Saharan Africa and beyond is one of our major aims at Gorta - Self Help Africa. By working closely with local organisations in our partner countries, we work to ensure communities have access to water for their daily needs, as well as farmers and local businesses for agriculture production needs. It’s thanks to our donors and partners that we can do this.

What we do…

  • Provide access to clean and safe drinking water at household level with improved access to sanitation.
  • Work to enhance agriculture productivity through the protection and conservation of natural ecosystems with the aim of increasing smallholder farmers' resilience to shocks.
  • Implement long-term water management programnmes in support of agriculture production.

Gorta - Self Help Africa works with its partners to develop integrated water management schemes. This is where communities can harness rainwater, improve irrigation practices and recharge groundwater to conserve the environment and even prevent local wells from drying up. Donations and support from our partners mean families will have clean water to cook and clean with, and farmers have water to grow crops.

Gorta - Self Help Africa believes in long-term sustainable development. You can work with us to make long-term water and sanitation solutions a reality for some of the world’s poorest communities.

“Over the period to 2050 the world's water will have to support the agricultural systems that will feed and create livelihoods for an additional 2.7 billion people. By 2050, 1,800 million people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two thirds of the world population could be under stress conditions.”
